ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS O----------------O |1. INTRODUCTION | O----------------O It's said that heroes appear in times of crisis. The time: end of the 2nd century; the place: China. To answer the call of the times, they have come. Its cries rendering the skies, the Phoenix soars. Shaking the ground beneath its feet, the Tiger roars. Piercing the clouds' veil, the Dragon rises to the heavens. Wherever they go, there rains fire and destruction. And so the age rages on: There is none who can stop it. - From the Dynasty Warriors 4 Instruction Manual The fourth installment of Koei's and Omega Force's widely popular Dynasty Warriors series, Dynasty Warrior 4 features the greatest heroes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms saga raging across the land for control over China. Featuring enhanced graphics, a new soundtrack, a branching story system, and bigger and harder battles, Dynasty Warriors 4 is sure to please fans of the series. O-------------------O |2. VERSION HISTORY | O-------------------O Version 0.2 (4/6/03) - Updated just about every section of the FAQ. Updated the FAQ and character sections. Added comments and information to the item section, as well as the locations for all of the items. 10th Weapon section complete, but requirements for each weapon are still being finalized. Added more stages and corrections to the walkthrough section. The stage paths and secret stage requirements are finished for the Shu, Wei, Wu, Lu Bu, and Nanman Musou Modes. Added a correction to the Shu "Eliminate Zhang Jiao" stage. Version 0.1 (4/3/03): First version of this FAQ. Since I'm playing this game just like everyone else, it's going to take some time to get all the English names of each of the stages in the game. For the walkthroughs I'll briefly touch on some of the main highlights, then get into details in later versions. Please do not send me e-mails telling me I'm missing a lot of stuff, since I _am_ missing a lot of stuff. And do not send me any e-mails asking me how to get any of the 10th weapons as I have not gotten any of them as of yet. O---------------------------------O |3. CHANGES IN DYNASTY WARRIORS 4 | O---------------------------------O [CHARACTERS] - There are three new characters: Yue Ying (Shu), Cao Ren (Wei), and Zhou Tai (Wu). - Fu Xi and Nu Wa are not available in the game. - Up to six alternate colors can be unlocked for each character as they gain ranks. The last two are alternate costumes from Dynasty Warriors 4. - Increasing a character's Life, Musou, Attack, and Defense abilities are a bit easier. [OFFICER EDIT] - You can create up to four officers to use in the game. [BODYGUARD EDIT] - You can edit a group of bodyguards as in Dynasty Warriors 3 Xtreme Legends. [CONTROLS] - Characters can execute a Charge Attack in mid air. This attack will cause the character to crash into the ground causing an explosion, knocking down all enemies within range. - Characters can announce themselves by pressing the R3 (Right Analog Stick) down. This causes an aura to appear around the character. Any enemies within range will be stunned temporarily. - Characters can perform a counter move by pressing the Triangle button while blocking (L1 button). During the counter animation if an enemy attacks you will dodge the move and hit them with a counter attack, knocking them back. - The Charge Attack (Triangle button) is now a special attack unique to each character. - The third Charge Attack (Square button x2, Triangle button) is now a multi hit charge attack. [MOUNTS] - Horses are much faster. Having a Harness Item will allow you to track your horse on the map. - You can pick up items while mounted on a horse. - You can dismount off a horse while it is running. - Mounts no longer trample allies. - Elephants are available on any stage with the special Elephant Harness item. [WEAPONS] - Weapons are no longer found in battle. Instead weapons gain experience when you defeat generals or perform combos on them. When a weapon gains a certain level of experience it gains a level and increases in power. Every three levels the weapon changes appearance and adds one to your maximum combos. Level 1: Initial Weapon Level 2: 1000 Exp Level 3: 3000 Exp Level 4: 6000 Exp +1 Combo Level 5: 10000 Exp Level 6: 15000 Exp Level 7: 21000 Exp +1 Combo Level 8: 28000 Exp Level 9: 36000 Exp Level 10: Special [ITEMS] - Characters now have a separate slot for a Harness item. - A new Orb item allows Charge Attacks to have an elemental effect when the Musou gauge is at max. - The number of Item slots available to a character depends on their rank. This is usually four at MAX rank, but some characters have five, and a few even have six. - There is a new temporary power up (Speed Boots) that maximizes your movement speed for 30 seconds. - Arrows now only come in increments of 10. [BODYGUARDS] - Bodyguards can become much stronger than in previous games. You can control the growth of bodyguards by equipping different weapons as they gain levels. Sword: Concentrate on Life growth. Spear: Concentrate on Musou growth. Pike: Concentrate on Attack growth. Bow: Concentrate on Defense growth. Crossbow: Concentrate on Defense growth. - Bodyguards can be given commands by pressing the Select button to change the icon near your character's portrait. Shield Icon: Defend your character. Sword Icon: Aggressively attack nearby enemies. Hand Icon: Wait at their current position for further orders. [DUELS] - When you encounter an enemy general, they may challenge you to a duel. Accepting a duel will transport you from battle to an arena where you will fight the general one on one. Losing the duel will result in a game over, while winning a duel will instantly defeat that general in battle (as well as give you their Item). If neither officer is defeated, the duel is a draw and battle continues as normal. Refusing a duel will lower the morale of your army, as will fighting to a draw during the duel. Before a duel both officer's Life gauges are refilled to maximum. After the duel their Life returns to the pre duel totals. [RELATIONSHIPS] - During the game you can develop relationships between characters depending on your actions. If you assist officers that are struggling in battle, their affection towards your character will increase. If you defeat an officer frequently in battle, their affection towards your character will decrease. Their affection will also drop if you defeat officers that are close or related to them. For example, Liu Bei will usually help Guan Yu if he is in trouble due to them being oath brothers. However, Guan Yu will most likely challenge an officer that has defeated Zhang Fei to a duel since he is also his oath brother. Characters that have high affection towards your character will help you against enemies if you are nearby. Characters with low affection are more likely to challenge you to a duel if they encounter you. [STRATEGY] - Officer units have a strategy plan they follow during the battle. You can view the strategy of a unit using the Unit Info option in the menu. Some strategies are more effective against others. With morale being even, a unit that has a more effective strategy will have an edge in battle. Balanced: Strong against all strategies. Tactical: Strong against Offensive. Weak against Defensive. Offensive: Strong against Defensive. Weak against Tactical. Defensive: Strong against Tactical. Weak against Offensive. Normal: Weak against all strategies. - You can view the locations of sub generals under an officer in the Unit Info option. - Before a battle begins you can switch characters in the pre battle menu. You can only change your character, and that character must be from your kingdom. [STAGES] - Instead of having a Musou Mode for each character, there is a general Musou Mode for each kingdom (Shu, Wei, and Wu). Each Musou Mode consists of six acts with three stages each and one final battle. You only need to clear the final battle of each act to move to the next, but clearing all the stages before the final act often gives you advantages in the last stage for that act. - There are Musou Modes for all of the Free Mode characters as in Dynasty Warriors 3 Xtreme Legends. [ARCHERS] - Archers fire much more slowly than before. The speed of their arrows has also been decreased, allowing you to dodge them more easily. - There is a new "archer" enemy, Bombardiers. These enemies throw bombs that explode, damaging everyone within radius and knocking them into the air. These bombs are dangerous to friends and foes alike. [ENEMIES] - Gate Captains no longer drop Defense shields. They drop Meat Buns instead. - Enemy A.I. is more aggressive. Enemies around you will aggressively attack you (even privates) if they see an opening, especially if your back is turned to them. They will also chase you much further than before. - Enemy bodyguards are much weaker than before defensively, but they are much more aggressive. Primary enemy generals may have as many as 30 guards near them. - Morale plays a much bigger factor in determining how aggressive your allies/enemies are. High morale will encourage your allies to attack/advance more frequently, while low morale will encourage your enemies to attack/advance more frequently. O------------------------------O |4. A weapon can gain an additional level under certain circumstances in Hard Difficulty (see 10TH WEAPONS sections for details). Q: Do 10th weapons have any elemental attacks or special abilities? A: No. They only increase your attack power. Q: Do 10th level weapons look different? A: Yes. +======+ |ITEMS | +======+ Q: What is the maximum level of Items? A: Special Items have a maximum level of 20. Orbs have a maximum level of 4. Q: How can I increase the amount of Items I can equip? A: Increasing a character's rank increases the number of Special Items they can equip (with the exception of Harnesses and Orbs). Most characters gain the maximum number of Item slots at Max rank, which is usually four. Some characters can have five, and a few even have six. Refer to the Items section for more details. Q: Where can I find (Item)? A: The Items you obtain in each stage are completely random, as are the levels. In general you can obtain higher level Items by playing the more difficult levels at higher difficulty levels, but this isn't always the case. Increasing your Luck also seems to help. For the locations of Special Items refer to the ITEMS section. +===========+ |BODYGUARDS | +===========+ Q: What is the maximum level of bodyguards? A: Level 20. Q: My bodyguards stopped gaining levels at 14! What gives? A: Bodyguards can continue to gain levels even when the B.G. Point total reaches 9999. Just keep getting B.G. Points and eventually they will gain more levels. Q: My bodyguards are wandering away even though they are supposed to be defending me! What gives? A: Bodyguards tend to wander around the area if you move long distances across the stage frequently. The only way to get them to stay in one area is +==============+ |MISCELLANEOUS | +==============+ Q: How do I unlock the opening edit? A: Unlock all 42 characters. Q: How do I make the fire attack succeed at the Battle of Chi Bi? A: The success (or failure) of the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi determines which stages you will receive during Act V and the Final Act for the Shu, Wei, and Wu Musou Modes. For the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi to be successful: 1. You must ensure that Zhuge Liang survives long enough to make the wind blow. He is located at the altar area on the west side of the map. Clear out any enemies that are attacking him directly, then defeat all nearby enemy generals. This should ensure that he survives long enough to make the wind blow. 2. You must ensure that Huang Gai survives long enough to launch the fire attack. He will appear near the east side of the central bridge a short period of time after the wind blows. Clear the bridge area around him of enemies, and defeat any nearby generals. This should ensure that he survives long enough to launch the fire attack. Note that the success of Pang Tong's plot is not necessary for the fire attack to succeed, but it will significantly reduce the number of enemies on the stage when the fire attack occurs. For Pang Tong's plot to succeed you must meet with him in the northwest corner of the map and defeat Xu Shu (not Xu Zhu!) before he encounters Pang Tong. Xu Shu should be somewhere northeast of Pang Tong's position (check the map). For the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi to be unsuccessful: 1. Defeat Zhuge Liang. 2. If Zhuge Liang is successful in making the wind blow, you can still prevent the fire attack by waiting for the arrival of Huang Gai near the east of the central bridge. Defeat Huang Gai when he arrives and the fire attack will be prevented. While stopping Pang Tong's plot is not necessary to stop the fire attack you can still discover and foil his plot simply by meeting him in the northwest corner of the map. Note that if you are playing as Shu or Wu forces, you can clear the stage before the fire attack occurs and it will count as if the fire attack had failed for game purposes. Q: My controller keeps vibrating continuously! How do I stop this? A: Many people have complained about this bug in the game. I myself have never had this happen to me during play. If this happens to you the simplest solution is to unplug your controller and plug it back in. If this doesn't solve the problem you may have to turn the vibration off in the game's option menu. Defeat Zhu Rong in a duel, defeat Meng Huo six times (once in a duel). When Meng Huo arrives at his base approach Wu Tugu. Zhuge Liang will say he has a plan to deal with the rattan armor troops. Fight Wu Tugu until the fire arrows event occurs. Tip: Zhuge Liang will be in danger throughout the stage. Leaving your elite bodyguards near him (using the wait command) will improve his chances for survival. Increasing his morale by defeating enemies will also help. [Ma Chao] Stage: Campaign for Cheng Du Requirements: Move to the west side of the map to trigger enemy reinforcements. Defeat Pang De and Ma Dai. [Jiang Wei] Stage: Battle of Tian Shui (Musou Mode only) Requirements: Defeat Cao Ren and Wang Lang in the north castle. Defeat the remaining generals outside, then defeat Yin Shang and Liang Xu in the east castle. Tip: Enter all four gates of the two castles from the outside. Leave your bodyguards with Zhuge Liang to increase his odds of survival. +===============+ |WEI CHARACTERS | +===============+ [Cao Cao] Stage: Battle of Chi Bi Requirements: Meet Pang Tong in the northwest to foil his plot. Follow him and when Liu Xun meets Ji Ling he will swear revenge. Liu Xun will move back towards the supply depot. Enter the depot before Liu [Zhou Yu] Stage: The Siege of Fan Castle Requirements: About 10 minutes into the battle a supply team will appear in the northeast and move to the castle's east entrance. Defeat the supply team before it reaches the entrance. [Sun Quan] Stage: Battle of He Fei Requirements: After Zhang Liao retreats, Sun Jian leaves his base, the bridge is destroyed and Sun Jian isolated, defeat Li Dian when he appears. The maximum number of special Items that can be equipped depends on the character and their rank. At Max rank the maximum number of Item slots for each character is the following: Six Items: (Shu) Zhuge Liang, Pang Tong (Wei) Sima Yi Five Items: (Shu) Liu Bei, Zhao Yun, Jiang Wei, Yue Ying (Wei) Cao Cao, Zhang Liao, Zhang He, Zhen Ji (Wu) Sun Jian, Sun Ce, Sun Shang Xiang, Zhou Yu, Lu Xun, Lu Meng, Da Qiao, Xiao Qiao (Other) Diao Chan, Yuan Shao, Zhu Rong, Zhang Jiao All other characters have a maximum of four Item slots. [Harnesses] * - Poor ** - Fair *** - Good **** - Excellent Harnesses allow you to begin a stage mounted on a special horse. The position of your horse is indicated on the large battle and pause menu map by an icon. Red Hare Saddle (****) Effect: Begin the battle mounted on Red Hare. The fastest horse in the game. Stage Found: Battle of Xia Pi (Lu Bu's forces) Requirements: Do not defeat any enemy generals until the cut scene where Guan Yu meets Red Hare. Defeat Guan Yu for the item to appear. Comments: Since having a Harness does not take up an item slot, there's no excuse why you shouldn't bring Red Hare along for the ride. The fastest horse in the game is also the best horse in the game. Hex Mark Saddle (**) Effect: Begin the battle mounted on Hex Mark. Luck increases. Comments: Not a bad horse, but Red Hare is so much better. Stage Found: Campaign against Liu Bei (Yellow Turban forces - Musou Mode only) Requirements: In Act I, select The Yellow Turban Fortress first. Then select the Campaign against Liu Bei. Defeat Zhao Yun and Guan Yu before the reinforcements arrive. Get Liu Bei's life to about half for the item to appear. Storm Saddle (**) Effect: Begin the battle mounted on Storm Runner. Mounted Attack increases. Comments: Ma Chao + Horned Helm + Storm Runner = Good Stuff. Stage Found: Campaign against Cao Cao (Lu Bu's forces) Requirements: See through either Xu Huang's or Yue Jin's ambushes. To see through Xu Huang's ambush approach the east circular path from the south. To see through Yue Jin's ambushes approach the west fort from the south. When Xiahou Dun appears as reinforcements defeat him for the item to appear. Shadow Saddle (***/**** with Ma Chao) Effect: Begin the battle mounted on Shadow Runner. Cannot be dismounted by attacks. Stage Found: Battle of Tong Gate Requirements: Defeat the four enemy generals in the southeast area. After the cut scene with Han Sui and Cao Cao and the Ice Fortress appears, defeat Yu Jin and Xu Huang. Defeat Cao Cao's sub generals and defeat enemies until his morale drops to one star. After the cut scene where the horses are discovered and the message that Han Sui refuses to defect appears, the item will appear in the southeast area. Comments: A good horse to use, especially with Ma Chao and his Charge Attack. Elephant Saddle (*) Effect: Begin the stage mounted on an elephant. Stage Found: The Nanman Campaign (Nanman forces) Requirements: While riding an elephant enter the enemy base. Tip: Huang Gai's bomb attack can knock allies of their mounts. Comments: I guess riding an elephant around in some levels might be fun, but you'll probably want to ride something a bit faster. [Orbs] (Max level 4) * - Poor ** - Fair *** - Good **** - Excellent Orbs add a special effect to Charge Attacks if the Musou gauge is at maximum. The power and frequency of the effect increases as the Orb's level increases. Fire Orb (**): Adds fire damage to attack. Enemies receive damage while they are on fire. Comments: Fire damage increases as Orb level increases. Ice Orb (***): Temporarily freezes enemies, reducing their defense. Comments: Chance of freezing enemies increases as Orb level increases. Lightning Orb (**): Lightning strikes nearby enemies, knocking them down. Comments: Lightning damage increases as Orb level increases. Blast Orb (*): Damages enemies even when guarding. Comments: Block damage increases as Orb level increases. Vorpal Orb (****): Increased damage, chance to kill non-general enemies instantly. Comments: Chance to instantly kill enemies increases as Orb level increases. Poison Orb (*): Poisons enemies, causing damage over time and reducing their defense. Comments: Damage and defense reduction increases as Orb level increases. [Special Items] (Max level 20) * - Poor. Equip only if you don't have anything better. ** - Fair. Useful in some circumstances. There are better options. *** - Good. Great for improving a character's shortcomings. **** - Excellent. You should always have this equipped. Peacock Urn (***): Increases Life gauge. Comments: Initially useful if your character has a short life gauge. Once you start getting Dim Sum, I'd recommend switching to the Tortoise Amulet. Dragon Amulet (**): Increases Musou gauge. Comments: I haven't found having more Musou to be particularly useful, especially since the effects of Orbs is dependent on your Musou gauge being full. The shorter your gauge the faster it will fill up. Tiger Amulet (****): Increases Attack. Comments: Unlike previous games, the attack boost here is significant, especially at higher levels. This gives weaker characters a good attack boost, and makes stronger characters real powerhouses. Tortoise Amulet (****): Increases Defense. Comments: Like the Tiger Amulet, the Tortoise Amulet significantly boosts defense, especially at higher levels. A high defense not only decreases the damage you receive but also increases your resistance to being stunned by attacks. There is no reason why you shouldn't have one equipped at all times. Speed Scroll (***): Increases Speed. Comments: The speed increase is not very noticeable unless this is at high levels. It provides a one step boost in speed at level 20 (i.e. from very slow to slow, or from fast to very fast). Wing Boots (*): Increases Jump ability. Comments: Slightly increases jump height. Not too useful. Huang's Bow (*/**** with Huang Zhong or Xiahou Yuan): Increases Bow Attack. Comments: Not too useful unless you are playing Huang Zhong or Xiahou Yuan. This affects their Charge attacks as well. Nanman Armor (*): Increases Bow Defense. Comments: Considering that arrow damage has been toned down significantly, this item isn't too useful. Horned Helm (*/**** with Ma Chao): Increases Mounted Attack. Comments: Not too useful unless you are playing Ma Chao. Ma Chao + Horned Helm + Calvary Armor + Storm/Shadow Runner = Good stuff. Calvary Armor (*/**** with Ma Chao): Increases Mounted Defense. Comments: Ma Chao + Horned Helm + Calvary Armor + Storm/Shadow Runner = Good stuff. Seven Star Sash (*): Increases Luck. Comments: It seems that items you receive in battle are determined more by random luck rather than luck itself. The jury is still out on whether or not this item actually does anything. Elixir (***): Musou gauge fills faster. Comments: A good item in conjunction with the Way of Musou item. Herbal Remedy (***): Increases Charge Attack effectiveness. Comments: The usefulness of this item depends on how often you use charge attacks. I would recommend using the Charge Bracer instead if you have it. Art of War (*) Effect: Increases the duration of power up items. Stage Found: Campaign against Sun Jian Requirements: Enter the north castle before enemy reinforcements arrive. Defeat at least four of the following generals: Sun Quan, Sun Shang Xiang, Zhou Tai, Lu Meng, and Gan Ning. A supply team will appear from the entry point at the north castle and move towards the southern castle entry point. Defeat the supply team for the item. Comments: Not very useful. Survival Guide (*) Effect: When life is critical, Attack x2 when knocked down. Stage Found: The Two Qiaos Requirements: Rescue in order Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao for the item to appear later when you approach the escape point. Comments: Not very useful. Bodyguard Manual (***) Effect: Bodyguards become stronger. Stage Found: Guan Yu's Escape (Liu Bei's forces) Requirements: When Xiahou Dun arrives and encounters Guan Yu the item will appear. Comments: This is a great item for bodyguards in training, as it will significantly extend their life expectancy. For elite bodyguards it makes them practically godlike. Way of Musou (***) Effect: Can use True Musou attacks regardless of life. Stage Found: Guan Yu's Escape (Cao Cao's forces) Requirements: When the 5th gate is passed a supply team will appear east of the bridge in front of the fourth gate and head eastward. Defeat the supply team for the item. Comments: In conjunction with the Elixir this can be useful. For some reason True Musou attacks don't seem to be as effective this time around. Power Scroll (*) Effect: Won't lose weapon deadlocks. Stage Found: The Yellow Turban Fortress (Yellow Turban forces) Requirements: Defeat Guan Yu and Zhao Yun. A supply team will appear to the northwest and move to the northeast entry point. Defeat the supply team for the item. Comments: Limited usefulness. Wind Scroll (****) Effect: Increases attack reach. Stage Found: Battle of Xu Chang (Shu forces) Requirements: Protect Yue Ying until she sets up the ramp vehicle, and defeat Xu Zhu when he ambushes the supply camp in the southwest. When Sima Yi remarks on the two plans failing the item will appear in the northwest. Comments: This significantly increases the range of your weapon. It's extremely useful for characters that have very little range. For characters with an already long-range weapon it makes them into absolute monsters. Fire Arrows (*/**** with Huang Zhong or Xiahou Yuan) Effect: Arrows become fire arrows. Stage Found: Unification of Jing (Wu forces) Requirements: Before the enemy generals join forces, defeat Wang Lang's sub general Zhou Xin for the supply team to appear at the west castle. Defeat the supply team for the item. Comments: Fun to play with but ultimately not very useful, unless you're playing as Huang Zhong or Xiahou Yuan. This item upgrades their Charge attacks to fire arrows. Charge Bracer (***) Effect: Charge attacks cannot be stopped by normal attacks. Stage Found: Campaign against Sun Jian (Yuan Shao's forces) Requirements: Enter the north castle before enemy reinforcements arrive. A supply team will appear south of the castle and move towards the entry point southwest of the castle. Comments: If you use Charge Attacks frequently this is an excellent item. O----------------O |8. WALKTHROUGHS | O----------------O Note: Since I'm still playing through the game I won't go into too many details for each stage for now. I will however point out some points of interest from my limited memory. +===============+ |Shu Musou Mode | +===============+ ------------------------- Shu - Act I The Oath in the Garden ------------------------- [The Yellow Turban Menace] - When you've cleared your initial area of generals Zhang Liang will summon a rain storm in the castle, which will be followed by an enemy ambush. - When you reach Zhang Liang's area he will activate the geysers in the area. These geysers will damage and knock back both ally and enemy alike. - The Dim Sum and Musou Wine are both located in the northern area where Zhang Liang is. From the entry point up the hill, head down the left ramp for the Dim Sum. The ramp on the right leads to the Musou Wine. - Zhang Liang will retreat when you approach him if you defeated all the main generals on the map. Defeating him here will prevent him from appearing in the final stage of this act. [The Yellow Turban Fortress] - The west route leads to a fort where phantom ghosts will appear. These ghosts can't be hit, but they can damage you. To break the spell, destroy the cauldrons in the southwest and southeast of the fort near the southern entrance. The Dim Sum is located in the southwest corner of the fort. - The east route leads to a circular path where strong wind currents will impede your progress. To proceed you will need to run against the wind. At the end of the path there will be several large windmills. Destroying all of them will stop the wind. The windmills can damage you if you are hit with their blades, so attack them from behind. The Musou Wine is located near the north entrance of the circular path. - Defeating Zhang Bao here will prevent him from appearing in the final stage of this act. [The Yellow Turban Rebellion] - If you have defeated Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao from the previous two stages they will not appear here. Otherwise, Zhang Bao will be in the west area and Zhang Liang will be in the east area. - If Zhang Bao is present, he will activate the flame geysers in the west area when you approach them. - If Zhang Liang is present, he will cause rolling rocks to appear in the east area. The Dim Sum is located in the northeast corner of Zhang Liang's area. - If both Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang are not present, Zhang Jiao will cause exploding boulders to roll down the path leading to his area. The Musou Wine is located in the northeast corner of Zhang Jiao's area. ---------------------------- Shu - Tales Return of the Yellow Turbans ---------------------------- Requirements: In Act I, select The Yellow Turban Rebellion first. [Eliminate Zhang Jiao!] - In order to stop Zhang Lu from meeting Zhang Jiao you must eliminate _all_ of his troops (in the blue gray uniforms). Ignore Zhang Lu as he will simply reappear once you defeat him. Once all of his forces are destroyed the real Zhang Lu will appear. Thanks go to Julie-Su for pointing this out. - If you try to defeat Zhang Jiao before Zhang Lu, strong winds will prevent you from reaching him. - If Zhang Lu reaches Zhang Jiao they will cast a spell that will turn you entire army against you. This spell cannot be broken. - If you defeat Zhang Lu before he reaches Zhang Jiao, Zhang Jiao will cast a weaker spell that turns part of your army against you. You can break the spell by destroying the glowing cauldrons around Zhang Jiao's area. ------------------------------ Shu - Act II The Alliance against Dong Zhou ------------------------------ [Battle of Si Shui Gate] - As you might have guessed from the opening movie (or if you've read the novel) Yuan Shu will not assist Sun Jian with provisions. If you reach the supply compound north of Si Shui Gate before this happens the problem will be solved. The Dim Sum is located in the southwest of the supply compound. - Hua Xiong will charge out of Si Shui gate and challenge you to a duel. - The Musou Wine is located on the other side of a low wall fortification in the southeast corner of the map. [Battle of Hu Lao Gate] - If you raided the supply depot before Sun Jian ran out of provisions at Si Shui gate, he will attack normally here. Otherwise, he will hold back his forces. - When the battering ram approaches Hu Lao Gate defeat the nearby gate captains to break the door down. - Lu Bu will appear when Hu Lao Gate falls. He will challenge you to a duel when you approach him. While it is possible to defeat him in the duel, it is very difficult. - The Dim Sum is located on top of Hu Lao Gate on the south half. The Musou Wine is located on the top of Hu Lao Gate on the north half. - If you skipped the Battle of Si Shui Gate Hua Xiong will launch an ambush at the allies base while you are at Hu Lao Gate. - Dong Zhou will retreat automatically when all the generals are defeated. He will also begin to retreat if his life becomes low. ---------------- Shu - Tales Guan Yu's Escape ---------------- Requirements: At the Battle of Si Shui Gate, do not enter the supply depot until Yuan Shao asks "Is there no one who can defeat Hua Xiong?" Defeat Hua Xiong. At the Battle of Hu Lao Gate defeat Lu Bu and Diao Chan, and let Dong Zhou escape. [Guan Yu's Escape] - Unlike Dynasty Warriors 3, the carriage you are escorting this time can be destroyed by enemy attacks. Keep close to the carriage and hopefully the enemy will concentrate their attacks on you rather than the carriage. - Xiahou Dun will appear to pursue you later in the stage. ----------------- Shu - Tales Heroes of the Han ----------------- Requirements: Clear Shu's Musou Mode once. Select Battle of Hu Lao Gate first, do not defeat Lu Bu, and defeat Dong Zhou. [Battle of Ru Nan] - Make sure to meet up with all the allied generals on this stage. --------------------- Shu - Act III The Flight of Liu Bei --------------------- [Battle of Bo Wan Po] - Follow Zhuge Liang's instructions to lure the enemy into his traps. Use the history option in the start menu to check the ambush locations on the map. [Battle of Chang Ban] - Clear a path for Liu Bei to the escape point. - Liu Chan will appear in the northwest corner of the fort later in the battle. [Battle of Chi Bi] - Meet with Pang Tong in the northwest corner of the map. Defeat Xu Shu to make Pang Tong's plan succeed. - Protect Zhuge Liang by clearing his area of enemies. When his morale reaches a certain level the wind will begin to blow. - Huang Gai will arrive in the east section of the central bridge. Clear the area of enemies and he will eventually launch the fire attack. - Pang Tong's plot isn't necessary for the fire attack to be successful, but it will significantly weaken Cao Cao's forces once the fire attack begins. ------------------ Shu - Act IV The Three Kingdoms ------------------ [Battle of Luo Castle] [The Campaign for Jing] [Campaign of Cheng Du] ------------------- Shu - Tales The Fury of Ma Chao ------------------- Requirements: Select Campaign of Cheng Du first. If Ma Chao is not unlocked yet, defeat him when he arrives as reinforcements. If Ma Chao is unlocked, defeat Pang De when he arrives as reinforcements. [Battle of Tong Gate] --------------- Shu - Act V The fall of Wei --------------- In Act III, if the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi is successful, this will be the Shu scenario for Act V. [Battle of Mt. Ding Jun] [Battle of Jie Ting] [Battle of Wu Zhang Plains] - When you get close enough to Sima Yi's position your character will begin to taunt him, reducing his morale. - Wei Yan will break orders during the battle. Don't worry too much about it. ---------------- Shu - Tales Dong Zhou lives! ---------------- Requirements: Clear less than 10 stages to this point. In Act II, at the Battle of Hu Lao Gate defeat all generals and let Dong Zhou escape. In Act V select Battle of Wu Zhang Plains first. [Battle of Han Zhong] - I wouldn't recommend doing this stage unless your character has a Harness and a level nine weapon. You will need to run back and forth between two forts that have minimal defenses, defending them both from a continuous stream of enemies. A few reinforcements will appear, but you will still have to bust some butt to prevent either fort from falling. -------------- Shu - Act V The fall of Wu -------------- In Act III, if the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi is unsuccessful, this will be the Shu scenario for Act V. [Battle of Fan Castle] [The Nanman Campaign] - This stage makes the one in Dynasty Warriors 3 look incredibly easy. I would highly recommend bringing a Harness and a level seven weapon at least. - Getting enemies off of elephants is much more difficult as they tend to ride in circles instead of coming straight at you, making it impossible to hit them with arrows. - Elephants will automatically smash through barriers when you ride into them. - All the water in this stage is poisonous. [Battle of Yi Ling] - To prevent the fire attack, wait at the outlet above the gate captain near the Shu camp. Later in the battle Zhu Ran will appear along with some task force leaders. Take them all out before they reach the center of the camp. This is very difficult to prevent since they tend to break up in different directions. - If the fire attack is successful, Zhou Tai and the Qiao sisters will appear in the Shu camp. Defeat them all and Zhuge Liang will make a bridge appear to the north connecting the northwest castle with the Wu encampment. - If you have a fast horse (i.e. Red Hare) it is possible to ride over stone walls as they are rising in the stone maze. - If you cleared The Nanman Campaign, Meng Huo will arrive with reinforcements later in the battle. ------------------- Shu - Tales Tian Shui's Prodigy ------------------- Requirements: In Shu - Act III, select Battle of Chi Bi first, and [Battle of Tian Shui] - Defeat all the enemies outside of the two fortresses first. - Defeat all of Jian Wei's sub generals when he exits the west fortress. Then meet up with him when Zhuge Liang is in the area. He will surrender to the Shu forces. - Shortly after Jian Wei's surrender two other generals will defect in the remaining castle and open the doors for you. ----------------------------- Shu - Final Act The End of the Three Kingdoms ----------------------------- If The fall of Wei was the scenario for Act V, the stages under The fall of Wu will appear here, and vice versa. After clearing the third stage, the final stage depends on the scenario for Act V. [Battle of Xu Chang] This will be the final Shu stage if Act V was The fall of Wu. - During the battle Yue Ying will begin to set up a ramp into the castle, while Xu Zhu launches an attack against the Shu supply camp in the southwest. Ignore the ramp and head to the supply camp ASAP. If you lose the supply camp you can pretty much kiss your allies goodbye, as this leads to a massive morale drop which will result in all of them getting killed. At the supply depot kill Xu Zhu and take out everyone in the vicinity. - The western half of Xu Chang Castle is filled with explosives. Sima Yi will attempt to blow up the Shu forces when they enter. The castle gates will close when he does this, but as long as you're on the bridges over the moat and not in the castle you'll be safe. [Battle of Jian Ye] This will be the final Shu stage if Act V was The fall of Wei. - The fake Sun Jians will drop ointments upon defeat. - Sun Ce, Sun Quan, and Sun Shang Xiang will reappear ad infinitum unless the real Sun Jian is defeated. - Once Sun Jian is defeated, Sun Ce will become the Wu leader and Sun Quan and Sun Shang Xiang will spawn infinitely. - Once Sun Ce is defeated, Sun Quan will become the Wu leader and Sun Shang Xiang will spawn infinitely. - Once Sun Quan is defeated, Sun Shang Xiang will become Wu leader. Defeating her ends the stage. +===============+ |Wei Musou Mode | +===============+ --------------- Wei - Act I A Hero of Chaos --------------- These stages are identical to the ones in the Shu Musou Mode. [The Yellow Turban Menace] [The Yellow Turban Fortress] [The Yellow Turban Rebellion] ------------------------------ Wei - Act II The Alliance against Dong Zhou ------------------------------ These stages are identical to the ones in the Shu Musou Mode. [Battle of Si Shui Gate] [Battle of Hu Lao Gate] ---------------------------- Wei - Tales Return of the Yellow Turbans ---------------------------- Requirements: In Act I, select The Yellow Turban Rebellion first. Defeat all generals and sub generals and let Zhang Jiao retreat. This stage is identical to the one in the Shu Musou Mode. [Eliminate Zhang Jiao!] ------------------- Wei - Act III The Rise of Cao Cao ------------------- [Battle of Xia Pi] [Battle of Wan Castle] - Zhang Xiu will retreat early on, but he'll be back. Stay close to Cao Cao. [Battle of Guan Du] - It's surprising easy to destroy Yuan Shao's forces here without even raiding the Wu Chao compound. ---------------- Wei - Tales Guan Yu's Escape ---------------- Requirements: In Act I, select The Yellow Turban Rebellion first. In Act II clear both stages. [Guan Yu's Escape] - Don't bother trying to destroy the carriage. It's actually a decoy and the real one will appear much farther away. If you do destroy the first one Liu Bei and Zhang Fei will appear later in the stage. ----------------------- Wei - Tales The Yuan Family's Pride ----------------------- Requirements: In Act II, select the Battle of Hu Lao Gate first and defeat Lu Bu. In Act III, select the Battle of Guan Du first, defeat all generals and let Yuan Shao retreat. [Battle of Ji Province] ----------------------- Wei - Act IV The War against Liu Bei ----------------------- [Battle of Bo Wan Po] - Listen to your strategist's advice. Zhuge Liang is a crafty fellow. [Battle of Chang Ban] - This is a rather frustrating stage. I would highly recommend bringing a Harness. Ignore all the generals and make a beeline for Liu Bei, as he will head directly towards the escape point from the start of the battle. Defeating Guan Yu may prevent Liu Bei from leaving, but I haven't confirmed this yet. - Zhuge Liang will lock you in the fortress if you enter. Defeating him opens the gate. [Battle of Chi Bi] - To uncover Pang Tong's plot, meet with him in the very upper northwest corner of the map. Don't bother running after him when he starts fleeing after he's discovered. - Defeat Zhuge Liang ASAP. - Ditto Huang Gai. -------------------- Wei - Tales The Stalwart Ma Chao -------------------- Requirements: In Act III select the Battle of Chi Bi first. [Battle of Tong Gate] - Defeat all of Han Sui's sub generals and lower his morale as much as possible. Eventually he will abandon Ma Chao and join your forces. --------------- Wei - Tales Lu Bu's Revenge --------------- Requirements: In Act II, during the Battle of Hu Lao Gate defeat Lu Bu. In Act III, during the Battle of Guan Du defeat Lu Bu. In Act IV play through all the stages in order. During the Battle of Chi Bi prevent the prayer for wind and fire attack. [Lu Bu's Offensive] - Ring the gongs near the south and west gate to close the gates to trap Lu Bu in the castle. Then ring the gong near the north gate and exit the castle. -------------- Wei - Act V The fall of Wu -------------- In Act IV, if the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi is prevented, this will be the Wei scenario for Act V. [The Siege of Fan Castle] - It's very difficult to destroy most of the siege weapons unless you have Red Hare from the start. In fact I don't know if it is possible to destroy both ramps before they set up. [Battle of Shi Ting] - Yes, Zhou Fang is planning to betray you. Keep close to Cao Xiu and protect him when he gets ambushed at the Wu gate. Clear a path back to the Wei base for him. [Battle of He Fei] --------------- Wei - Act V The fall of Shu --------------- In Act IV, if the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi is not prevented, this will be the Wei scenario for Act V. [Battle of Mt. Ding Jun] - Take out Zhang Fei and Zhuge Liang here as quickly as possible. You can't get back in your fort, so run down the side path back to the Shu side to help out Xiahou Yuan, who will be in serious jeopardy facing Huang Zhong. [Battle of Jie Ting] - This is a fun mission. Surround Ma Su by quickly eliminating all of his sub generals stationed around the mountain fortress. - Shu forces will arrive to attempt to rescue Ma Su. Kill Ma Su first, then take out the remaining generals. [Battle of Wu Zhang Plains] - There is a Shu supply compound in the southwest near their base. Raiding it gives you an advantage, but it is guarded by several of Zhuge Liang's fire breathing juggernauts. These large wooden mechanical devices shoot streams of fire and have an insane amount of life. I would recommend having a level nine weapon, a high level Tiger and Tortoise Amulet, and level 20 bodyguards if you intend on dealing with them. - If you surrounded and defeated Ma Su previously at the Battle of Jie Ting, when he arrives Sima Yi will begin taunting him. While this serves no purpose strategy wise, it is highly amusing and I would recommend seeing this at least once. =) ---------------- Wei - Tales Dong Zhou lives! ---------------- Requirements: Clear less than 10 stages. In Act II, during the Battle at Hu Lao Gate let Dong Zhou retreat. In Act V, depending on which scenario you receive select the Battle of He Fei or the Battle of Wu Zhang Plains first. [Dong Zhou in Ji] ----------------------------- Wei - Final Act The End of the Three Kingdoms ----------------------------- If The fall of Wu was the scenario for Act V, the stages under The fall of Shu will appear here, and vice versa. After clearing the third stage, the final stage depends on the scenario for Act V. [Battle of Jian Ye] This will be the final Wei stage if Act V was The Fall of Shu. This stage is identical to the final Shu vs Wu battle. [Battle of Chen Du] This will be the final Wei stage if Act V was The Fall of Wu. - This stage wins the award for the longest battle ever. You could probably write a walkthrough for this stage alone. - Do not engage Wei Yan during the battle. Eventually he will join your side. - Arbalests will attack you in the center fortress. These are like archers, except they will shoot ten arrows at once instead of one. They cannot shoot you if you are underneath them. Defeat Ma Su will stop the arbalests from attacking. - Zhang Fei, Guan Yu, and Guan Ping are waiting to ambush you in the forest leading to Liu Bei. - Ma Chao will arrive later in the north fortress to raise some hell. - In the southwest cliff road Juggernauts will attack you. Defeat Yue Yin will cause their attacks to stop. - When Liu Bei is down to his last forces, a peasant militia will appear to help him. A lot of good it's going to do him. =) +==============+ |Wu Musou Mode | +==============+ ----------------------- Wu - Act I The Tiger of Jiang Dong ----------------------- These stages are identical to the ones in the Shu Musou Mode. [The Yellow Turban Menace] [The Yellow Turban Fortress] [The Yellow Turban Rebellion] ---------------------------- Wu - Tales Return of the Yellow Turbans ---------------------------- Requirements: Select The Yellow Turban Rebellion first. Defeat all generals and sub generals and let Zhang Jiao retreat. This stage is identical to the one in the Shu Musou Mode. [Eliminate Zhang Jiao!] ------------- Wu - Tales The Two Qiaos ------------- Requirements: Clear Wu Musou Mode once. In Act I, select The Yellow Turban Fortress first, then The Yellow Turban Rebellion. [The Two Qiaos] - This one isn't for the faint at heart. I would recommend a built up character for this stage with some high level items. If any of your allies die here it's game over. - Save Da Qiao ASAP. - When Da Qiao is safe head up to her sister and rescue her as well. Sun Ce will join up with you. - As you're leaving the castle all hell will break lose as hundreds of enemies will appear on the map. Stay close to your party and take out everyone that comes near you. ------------------------------ Wu - Act II The Alliance against Dong Zhou ------------------------------ These stages are identical to the ones in the Shu Musou Mode. [Battle of Si Shui Gate] [Battle of Hu Lao Gate] ------------------------- Wu - Tales The Symbol of the Mandate ------------------------- Requirements: In Act II, select Battle of Hu Lao Gate first. [The Imperial Seal] - Your goal here is to smash 99 boxes. Don't ask me where they all are since my personal best is only 98 boxes. =P - Zhang Liao, Diao Chan, Lu Bu, and Dong Zhou will all arrive to join the party. Killing them all will make your box hunting much easier. - Several times during the battle scouts will report seeing possible locations of the Imperial Seal. These boxes are specially marked and have items in them, but they won't have the Imperial Seal unless you break all 99 boxes. - If you have less than three minutes remaining on the stage, the box containing the Imperial Seal will appear on the map. -------------------- Wu - Act III The Little Conqueror -------------------- [Assault on Liu Biao] [Campaign for the Wu Territory] - You'll need to proceed in a Z pattern here. - Defeat Taishi Ci and he will join you later in the battle. - Ring the gong when its location appears on the map. This opens the final fort doors. [Unification of Jiang Dong] --------------------- Wu - Tales The Tiger's Adversary --------------------- Requirements: In Act III, select Unification of Jiang Dong first. [Unification of Jing] ------------------ Wu - Act IV Showdown at Chi Bi ------------------ [Battle of Xia Kou] - Gan Ning is waiting for you on the northern ship, and he is one bad mother. - When explosives are discovered on the ship, find and strike them to set the ship on fire. Leave the ship so it can be launched at Huang Zu's ship when he arrives. [Defense of Nanman] - This battle is a headache, but clearing it will make your life easier at Chi Bi. [Battle of Chi Bi] - The number of Wu troops will decrease here if you didn't clear the Defense of Nanman first. - Zhuge Liang will be vulnerable here (especially if you didn't clear the first two stages), so if you want the fire attack to succeed you will probably have to let Pang Tong's plot fail while you baby-sit Zhuge Liang. --------------- Wu - Act V The fall of Shu --------------- In Act IV, if the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi is successful, this will be the Wu scenario for Act V. [Race for the Nan Territory] - For some strange reason the Shu forces here are _helping_ you here against Wei. Don't get all excited since you will need to take the fortresses before they do by defeating the enemy generals. - If you are playing as Zhou Yu, when you are hit with an arrow in the cut scene retreat back to base camp until Cao Ren talks about your demise. [The Nanman Campaign] This stage is identical to the one in the Shu Musou Mode. [Battle of Yi Ling] - The watchtowers will detect Zhu Ran while he's moving around the Shu encampment. I'm not sure if eliminating all the watchtowers or certain ones will prevent this from happening. - If Zhu Ran is discovered (and he probably will be), protect him by taking out everyone near him. He only has two bodyguards (dressed in Shu uniforms) with him so he is especially vulnerable to attack. Follow him around and be his bodyguard until he triggers the fire attack. - While you are having fun in the stone maze, Zhuge Liang will lead the Shu forces across the river to the Wu encampment via a floating bridge. - If you cleared The Nanman Campaign Meng Huo will appear to attack the Wu base. ------------------- Wu - Tales Guan Yu, God of War ------------------- Requirements: Clear Wu Musou Mode once. In Act IV, select Battle of Chi Bi first. Ensure the success of the prayer for wind and fire attack. In Act V (The fall of Shu), select Battle of Yi Ling first and ensure the success of the fire attack by protecting Zhu Ran. [Battle of Mai Castle] --------------- Wu - Act V The fall of Wei --------------- In Act IV, if the fire attack at the Battle of Chi Bi is unsuccessful, this will be the Wu scenario for Act V. [The Siege of Fan Castle] - A Harness is highly recommended here, as you will be playing Missile Command by trying to defend the siege weapons here. - Ambush troops will appear continuously during the battle. They will all make a beeline towards the nearest siege weapon. I have no idea if anything will prevent them from appearing. - Once one ramp is successfully set up, head in the castle and eliminate the generals ASAP. [Battle of Shi Ting] - Don't attack Zhou Fang. He will be followed by Cao Xiu (don't kill him either). If one of your allies starts fighting Cao Xiu, let them die. Once Zhou Fang leads Cao Xiu to the Wu gate, Zhou Fang will change sides. Then you can kill Cao Xiu. [Battle of He Fei] - Take out Zhang Liao ASAP when he appears. ---------------- Wu - Tales Dong Zhou lives! ---------------- Requirements: Clear less than 10 stages. In Act II, at the Battle of Hu Lao Gate allow Dong Zhou to escape. With The fall of Wei as Act V, select the Battle of He Fei first. [Battle of Chang Jiang] - At the start of the stage clear out the enemy near the supply camp area. Once the supply camp area is secure then you can concentrate on eliminating the other generals. - Don't be confused when you see Nanman troops here. They are teamed up with Dong Zhou's forces. - After Dong Zhou is defeated, Meng Huo and Zhu Rong will appear to attack. ----------------------------- Wu - Final Act The End of the Three Kingdoms ----------------------------- If The fall of Shu was the scenario for Act V, the stages under The fall of Wei will appear here, and vice versa. After clearing the third stage, the final stage depends on the scenario for Act V. [Battle of Chen Du] This will be the final Wu stage if Act V was The Fall of Wei. This stage is identical to the final Wei vs Shu battle. [Battle of Xu Chang] This will be the final Wu stage if Act V was The Fall of Shu. This stage is identical to the final Shu vs Wei battle. +===================+ |Lu Bu's Musou Mode | +===================+ ------------------------------ Lu Bu - Act I The Alliance against Dong Zhou ------------------------------ [Battle of Si Shui Gate] - At the start of the battle a messenger will be sent to alert the allied forces. Eliminate him quickly by heading north from the start of the battle. [Battle of Hu Lao Gate] ------------------------------ Lu Bu - Act II The Assassination of Dong Zhou ------------------------------ [Lu Bu's Revolt] -------------------- Lu Bu - Act III The Villain's Demise -------------------- [Battle of Xia Pi] - Protect the carriage when it leaves the castle. [Campaign against Cao Cao] --------------------- Lu Bu - Final Act The Mightiest Warrior --------------------- [Campaign against Sun Jian] [Campaign against Liu Bei] +==================+ |Nanman Musou Mode | +==================+ ----------------------- Nanman - Act I Invasion from the North ----------------------- [The Nanman Campaign] - Eliminate Ma Su as soon as possible to prevent the Shu ploy from succeeding. --------------- Nanman - Act II Taking Wu --------------- [Battle of Jian Ye] This stage is identical to the final Shu vs Wu and Wei vs Wu battle. ---------------- Nanman - Act III Taking Wei ---------------- [Battle of Xu Chang] This stage is identical to the final Shu vs Wei and Wu vs Wei battle. --------------- Nanman - Act IV Taking Shu --------------- [Battle of Cheng Du] This stage is identical to the final Wei vs Shu and Wu vs Shu battle.
